Precision machining is the process of manufacturing parts under extremely tight tolerances to ensure that all technical aspects of fit and finish are met during production. Not every job will require such a high degree of precision manufacturing, but it can be critical when parts need to meet highly specific design specifications. Precision parts can be found across all fields, from medical and aerospace to automotive and home entertainment.

Types of Precision Machining

When parts need to be manufactured with a high degree of precision, they are almost always produced on CNC machines (Computer Numerical Control.) Using advanced computer technology, these machines can efficiently remove material in a repeatable process while holding much tighter tolerances than manual machining (often less than one ten thousandth of an inch.) CNC mills, lathes, grinders and EDM (electrical discharge machining) are all examples of manufacturing technology that is being utilized in high precision applications

Advantages and Disadvantages of Precision Machining

Everyone wants to produce and receive high quality parts, but the level of precision required can vary from project to project and should be taken into account. In many instances, precision manufacturing isn’t needed, and calling for tight tolerances on part geometry could lead to unnecessary and expensive machining operations that do nothing to enhance its function. In other scenarios, it can be highly critical that parts align properly, move freely without obstruction, or mate together with little to no interference, in which case precision machining is a must.
