The Pacific Northwest is no stranger to knife making, with many big name distributors stationed throughout the greater Portland area (Gerber, Kershaw, CRKT and others.) What many do not know however, is that the Northwest is also home to a large number of small-scale custom makers who are producing incredibly high-end knives in their own homes/shops throughout the region, and their numbers continue to grow.
Having spent countless hours perfecting their craft, knife makers are constantly experimenting with new styles and materials as they look to improve upon past creations, and to learn and adapt from others in the field. These talented artists, be they professionals or hobbyists are never lacking in passion or drive, but what they could use more of is time, and that is where it helps to have a partner in manufacturing who can help take some of the “busy work” off the proverbial plate.
While every aspect of knife making is important, some are more glamorous than others. Cutting out blades, scales, spacers, clips, etc. is critical, but time-consuming, and it can significantly eat into production and take up countless hours that could have been better spent elsewhere in the process. At R&R Manufacturing, we can help you work smarter, not harder. We have partnered with nearly a dozen custom makers throughout the region, and learned about what it takes to produce a knife of the highest quality. The R&R team can help speed up your stock removal, maximize material yield and deliver a level of accuracy that is difficult to achieve through other methods. We’ve worked with a wide range of materials, including carbon/alloy/tool steels, titanium and Damascus, and can help with part layout to get the highest number of components out of a sheet/bar.
Over the past several years at R&R, we’ve had the opportunity to do work for more and more knife makers. We believe that our attention to detail and appreciation for the craft have set us apart from other shops, and given our customers the confidence to trust us with a crucial step in their production process. More importantly, we’ve been able to free up some much needed time that they can use to produce more knives, and continue to create/innovate in the space.
